Hello forum,
I'm posting to hopefully get some advice and thoughts on what to do with my 1992 2.0l Accord Aerodeck. I've owned the car since 2007. In my ownership, it's had a fair amount of work done, but it's reaching the point where I either have to put a lot more work into it, or sell it or, worst case, scrap it. It's been a reliable car and has given me good service, so I would prefer not to scrap it. But, I don't think I have the funds to bring it back to good condition again.
The outstanding issues are:
- Despite having replaced the *entire* exhaust including the manifold and down pipes, it is blowing from the top end. This is especially noticable at higher RPMs or under hard acceleration at any engine speed. I have re-fitted the entire exhaust myself with new seals and bolts where needed. The rear silencer will be in need of replacement soon. I have found it hard to get hold of parts for the exhaust - parts for the 2.2 engined version seem to be very easy to come by, but the 2.0 seems to be nearly impossible. I was told when I last replaced the rear silencer that I had perhaps the last one in the country. The exhaust sounds pretty bad, when in fact most of it is new. It makes the car sound like and old banger.
- Both rear wheel arches are rusty. They have already been fixed up but it's coming through again, and worse this time. There's a hole in the driver's side rear quarter, next to the wheel arch, which is covered over with black duck tape.
- The boot door has a hole a few inches wide and about an inch high. It is also covered over with black duck tape.
- The heater controls aren't great - about half way between hot and cold, there's a very stiff bit. The control works, but not as it should.
- The air conditioning hasn't worked for some years. Various air-con "specialists" have looked at it and after charging me for many re-gasses, have been unable to fix it.
- The car is hard to drive smoothly. It will drive at motorways all day with no problem at all, but around town, it's jerky and bunny-hops very easily. Asking the car for hard acceleration can often result in a noticable lurch, much more than I would expect and more than I have ever experience in any of my other cars. A degree of knowing how to play the clutch allows me to drive it smoothly, but it's not ideal.
- The electric aerial mast has been snapped off by some local idiots. The motor works but I have disconnected it until the mast can be replaced.
- The central locking on the driver's door doesn't work properly. Sometimes it just blocks me from unlocking the door until I've turned the key to the lock position again (even though the car is already locked). Other times it will unlock. Then unlock again. And again. And again. And again. The central locking works fine if I use the boot lock or the passenger door.
- The factory/dealer fit alarm doesn't work. There's a key lock inside the glove box, but I don't have a key for it.
And I think that's about it!
I'd appreciate thoughts on what to do with this car. It's given me good service, but it's getting to the point where I don't think it will get through its next MOT (May), and I think it's beyond my financial means to repair.
Thanks!
